Sonotube woofer enclosure?

I want to add a sub but don't want to spend a lot on it. I'm not looking for something that shatters windows, just something that fills in the lows and sounds good.

My idea is to build a sonotube enclosure mounted horizontally just behind the rear seats (like a nitrous tank). However, I have no clue about tube length/diameter or woofer size. I'm not even sure what frequency to tune for. I've heard of 2 approaches to this: a single driver at one end with a sealed tube or one driver at each end with a port in the middle.

Has anyone done this in their car? Any words of advice?

Just build a regular box and correctly aim the subwoofer.

Firing a subwoofer off to the side will loose potential.

Yea, and they give great sound quality, take up zero room and are dirt cheap to build

How much loss are we talking? I think I want to run a 10" driver in a 12" tube. With about 30" of space to work with, I could probably even install a divider and run two sealed chambers with 2 drivers. My other thought was to port it and direct the port towards the back of the seat.

Like I said, I'm more concerned with having nice sounding bass (tight, and clear) then having a ton of power.

I dont know what magical properties a round tube will yield...

The bottom line is if the sub isnt aiming to the rear or to the front you will loose a little bass.

If you dont want to take up much room buy a shallow mount sub, build a slim fitting box... Done deal.
