Hi everyone,
a few weeks ago i posted a question about my 2000 olds alero GLS v6
4 door with 23000 miles. I had asked if anyone had experienced or
had fixed a problem regarding having their front passenger seat rock
or move ever so slightly when the car accelerated.
I had quite a few responses posted to the group and to me
personally, but the end result was that no one seemed to know the
answer, and there were even a few people who had similar
experiences, but had just learned to live with it.
well, being the pain in the ass over every little nuisance that I am
(according to my wife), i couldn't leave well enough alone and just
live with the seat rocking. It wasn't even a really big movement,
just a slight irritating nudge when the car was accelerated hard
from a stop. But it's always the little things that bother the heck
out of me! AND I HAD TO FIX IT!
So i got down on my hands and knees and checked every nut and bolt
on the seat that i could, while the seat was still attached to the
car. Nothing!!!, i couldn't find anything that was loose or
misaligned. Then i took the seat out of the car, and checked
everything, again, nothing!!!
I figured something must've been wrong with the seat track
internally, as the entire seat assembly was rock solid. I had
surmised that it might've been the seat silders within the track.
But that was actually a wrong assumption on my part as i discovered
later on.
I then went ahead and ordered two new seat tracks from
gmpartsdirect.com that website is great!!!
You have to order two seat tracks, because apparently the passenger
seat rides on a left and a right track, which you can replace
independently. I thought it was just one whole assembly, but
apparently not!!
After i received the two new (left and right) tracks from
gmpartsdirect, i then went and took off my old seat tracks from the
passenger seat. i compared my old tracks to the new ones, the
replacement tracks from GM seemed to have been manufactured
differently than from my original year 2000 seat tracks. The new
ones seemed sturdier and welded better. and more importantly, i
looked at the teeth that the track locks onto after you adjust your
seat.
It seems that when you slide your passenger seat, either forward or
backwards, the track locks onto 3 teeth on each track (Left and
Right), well apparently those teeth get worn, and when they do, you
have a very very slight movement thats possible, but you won't seem
to notice unless you have a new seat track to compare to your old
ones or until you are driving.
Hopefully, the new replacement tracks are made from better and
stronger steel than my old ones, otherwise eventually the metal will
get worn again, and i'll have to spend two more hours in the garage,
cursing and going through my bandaid supplies again to replace those
seat tracks every few years!
OH!!! and if you think the tracks are easy to replace, think
again!!!, the tracks are bolted from the top down, meaning you have
to take your seat out of the car, undo the reclining handle, selt
belt attachment lock, and pull your seat cushion apart to get to the
four 13mm bolts that hold the track to the seat!!!
Thanks GM for the good quality parts and design!!!
Good Luck and I hope this info helps someone!
I'm gonna go driving down with my wife to get something to eat, and
sit in my NOW rock solid passenger seat!!!!!
