found a 5 speed grandam
I was at the u pull it the other day and found a 01 grand am with a 5 sspeed. My question is what do I need to pull off of the grand am to make the tranny work in my 3.4 alero. I know the obvious like the shshifter assembly the clutch pedal and clutch lines. I'm not sure of the GA engine size the engine has been removed, or.if this tranny can handle 3.4 power. But I want to do it. Any advice is wanted. Lol

01 is probably the 2.4, so that tranny will probably not work, you want the f23 tranny which was mated to the ecotec? Cliff can correct me if i'm wrong.
But yes the shifter cables, clutch pedal assembly (have fun with that, its a pain in the but with the entire dash and driver's seat taken out, let alone with the full interior still in place

I don't know that a 4-cyl tranny will work with a 6-cyl engine.

At least the auto 4 cyl, have the 4t40 tranny which is exactly the same housing as the 4t45 but the 4t40 can't handle the power of the v6

So the 5-speed from an ecotec will work on the LA1?

Both 2.4 and 2.2eco on n-body had the getrag f23 tranny but the bellhousing (bolt pattern) are different. YEs there is 4 cyl tranny that work with your v6, and pretty sure they can handle the power.
INFO from v6 swaps into Cavaliers(info would be slightly different since its not the same platform but you should be able to figure it out. By difference I would think mounts.)
quote: from http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.ph...=417001#417001
Transmission:
The GM FWD V6 engines share the same bolt pattern as the OHV 4 cylinder engines ( the two found in the 3rd gen J-body cars are the 2.2OHV and the 2200)
If you have a car equipped with an OHV engine already, you can retain your existing tranny. If you are swapping to a car with a DOHC engine, you need to swap your tranny as well.(This means you cant use that tranny from the 2.4 you found, but use the mounts.)
Options for auto are the 4t40e (4 speed auto) that comes in the J, the 4t45e that comes in most of the FWD V6 cars, and the 3t40e, if you feel so inclined, but this will cause a difficulty with the ECM as well.(you dont want this lol)
Options for manual are the Isuzu from an 95-99 OHV car,the Getrag from an 00+ OHV car, or the NVG T550. The Isuzu and the Getrag will bolt into the factory mounts if you are swapping from a DOHC of the same genre of car (95-99 or 00+). The NVG most likely needs new mounts. [you need tranny from a cavalier 00+ but with a 2.2OHV (non ecotec since they dont come in that year)]
If you wish to convert from an Isuzu to a Getrag, search for that swap in the transmission forum.
From that grand am get the mentioned stuff already but dont forget the mounts, get all the tranny mounts even tho you cant use that particular tranny.

I had mounts but everything ended up having to be custom made anyways

The rear tranny mount so I can swap my solid bushing mount without taking mine out yet, or even so turbotechracing can look at it at and made the solid mount...but that was directed to jawa since he would be at the junkyard, unless you have one laying around.

You would need to pull.....
Shifter
Shift Cables
Clutch and brake pedals, clutch safety switches
Clutch Hydraulics
trans mounts (3!)
CV Axles
Subframe..
Complete, or sections of the engine wiring harness and dash harness for the specific wiring differences would be nice, but not 100% necessary... At least get the pigtails for the backup light switch and clutch safety switches. Depends on how perfect you want it.
What you would still need...
Trans/Flywheel/Clutch (From aforementioned 2200 Cavalier/Sunfire)
Console trim for a 5-speed Alero.
Trim for the ignition switch if you really wanted to be picky.
Ability to tune the A/T parameters out of the PCM.
That's all I can think of right now... If you're proficient with working with this stuff and you had everything you needed there, I'd say it could be done within a weeks time depending on how much time you dedicated to it.

it says... "SHIFT TO REV TO REMOVE KEY" or something to that effect. For the shift interlock.
