Blown Tranny/Diff

alright guys, bad news for the alero, i broke something pretty bad, and now i need to fix it.

there is a hole in the side of my tranny, so i need a new one of those.


if i'm going to do the tranny (not cheap, but i might do it still) do you think it's possible to change it myself in a weekend?

im thinking about getting my new parts from mantapart.com anyone have experience with them?

i'm going to get a new clutch. i was thinking the 2.2 TC Sports HD Clutch from mantaparts.
and a new flywheel: 2.2 TC Sports Flywheel from them aswell.
and while the transmission is out, i think it's a good time for a lsd. like this one http://cgi.ebay.ca/OBX-LSD-DIFFERENT...item3362219f4e

now is a lsd a good idea? my car is normally a dd, and i thought lsd would help alot in the snow, mud, rain. and of course the racing ability

now on the tranny. i've been reading that the caviler/sunfire/cobalt transmissions will not work. with sucks. i can find used ones around here, but the have the same km as mine for around $650 canadian

but my biggest concern is it easy to pull the tranny out myself. i have a shop, and various tools (air tools etc) or should i get it done professionally

Depending on how many hours a day you work on in it in that weekend, it could very well be possible to pull it out and put a new one in.

I just got my transmission rebuilt from a guy.. I dropped it off at his house and he did it in his garage for 900, (pull, rebuild, re-install) he did a good job too just got my car back 2 days ago.

it took him 6 days to do it, and thats with working 9-5 everyday and coming home and making time to do my car, so if he can do it in 6 days with working a full time job, im sure you could get that knocked out in a weekend!

Pulling a tranny isn't complicated work by any means.. but it's hard, IMO. Pulling it with a tranny jack/lift is totally do able, but doing it on the floor with a jack and jack stands would be tough.

That's not to say you can't do it... I'd probably make sure to have at least two big friends around, and a couple extra jacks to help with reattaching the cradle, using it to hold/lower/raise the trans, etc.

If you want a project, it's certainly one you'll feel good about when you're done.

Why do people claim that the J-Body trans won't work... As long as it's a F23 from an Ecotec it should be fine.

For a performance flywheel, I think Fidanza makes one.. I have one on my 3400 and with no issues.

As for the clutch, go with something reputable. I absolutely love my "FX300" from Clutchmasters. Some people like SPEC clutches, but it almost seems like you either get a good one, or you get a dud.

A LSD (especially a helical) is awesome. It takes a little getting used to, especially when you power through a turn, but better traction is inevitable with one!

Um, this tranny swap was in another thread, IIRC its the cavy/sunfire 2200 trannys that work, not the L61's tranny...

The GM FWD V6 engines share the same bolt pattern as the OHV 4 cylinder engines ( the two found in the 3rd gen J-body cars are the 2.2OHV and the 2200)

If you have a car equipped with an OHV engine already, you can retain your existing tranny. If you are swapping to a car with a DOHC engine, you need to swap your tranny as well.(This means you cant use that tranny from the 2.4 you found, but use the mounts.)

Options for auto are the 4t40e (4 speed auto) that comes in the J, the 4t45e that comes in most of the FWD V6 cars, and the 3t40e, if you feel so inclined, but this will cause a difficulty with the ECM as well.(you dont want this lol)

Options for manual are the Isuzu from an 95-99 OHV car,the Getrag from an 00+ OHV car, or the NVG T550. The Isuzu and the Getrag will bolt into the factory mounts if you are swapping from a DOHC of the same genre of car (95-99 or 00+). The NVG most likely needs new mounts. [you need tranny from a cavalier 00+ but with a 2.2OHV (non ecotec since they dont come in that year)]

If you wish to convert from an Isuzu to a Getrag, search for that swap in the transmission forum.

From that grand am get the mentioned stuff already but dont forget the mounts, get all the tranny mounts even tho you cant use that particular tranny.

Now cliff from what I have gather by words not hard prove or even pictures.. ppl saying that if has different mount points. I alwayz had the impression that it was the same.

i've read the same thing vic, that the j-body trannys mount different.

and cliff. im new to the whole picking out clutches, and flywheels. i've never done it. im almost tempted to take it to a shop and get them to just fix it.

i was at the clutch masters sight, they dont seem to have anything alero specific. they have 2.2 cobalts, but from 2005+. not sure if there are any differences.

my car doesn't make insane power, i just want something better if i'm sinking a few grand into this.

and side note. i have no problems pulling a transmission from semis, i can do that no problem. if i were to pull it from the alero, i'd try to go out the bottom

you can only get it out the bottom.. Idk if your shop has a lift. If so I dont see why not. For clutches anything cavalier its the same, as long as its ecotec. I actually have an exedy replacement for stock clutch on my hands. If you want it real cheap we can work a deal. IF you thinking to race the car and beat on it hard than I would do atleast stage two clutchmaster or a bully. I have spec stage 1 on my car and it has taken alot of abuse with more power and torque than stock, has not slip yet but spec are kinda a hit or miss.
Lots of people are running superchargers on stock clutch and no issue too. So depends on you and how much you want to spend.

this was no rock. i went to go take off, and i think a bearing blew inside the differential, and got shot outside like that.

my shop does not have a lift. i have jacks lol.
so, for the flywheel and clutch, cavaliers are the same, does that go with cobalts and stuff too? anything ecotec any year i assume.

and i might be interested in your clutch. does it include everything needed? (other than flywheel obviously)

i do race the car occasionally, and i am pretty hard on the clutch sometimes. i would like to make big power one day, but honestly it probably wont be for a long time. so i think i'll stay away from spec clutches. if i'm putting something in, i want it to be good, and not have to remove it right away.

this car is my dd. so the clutch can't be anything crazy. but i want it to beable to withstand some abuse, so i was thinking stage 1 or something like that. but if the price is right. did you get the one with a new slave cylinder. if i have it out, anything and everything is getting changed.

the clutch masters seem to be really expensive. i'm not making very much power, so i probably dont need something like that.

and i've been reading obx reviews. some good some bad. any opinions?
so after more reading, sounds like the obx is good if you rebuild it once you get it. maybe i should just get a quaife and be done, or stick with the open diff. but i think blowing up my open diff is what took out my tranny

No cobalts parts.. Yes the clutch I have is the whole kit. They go for around 200shipped. Obviously for the 2.2 not 2.4

If had my tranny all the way apart like that I would give it a shot to an LSD, but since OBX is not top notch you dont want that new lsd failing and blowing another whole thru. People using obx usually take it apart and rebuilt them(change the washers inside) but that can be $100-120 extra, Plus you need to know what you doing. Remember its just not taking it down, you need to open the case to change the diff, but im sure theres some guide online.

I don't doubt that the trans mounts different in a J-Body. But I also doubt that those differences are more than just the brackets that bolt on to the trans.

The clutch is the same between the J and N body cars per the ACDelco website. It's ridiculously expensive ($500+) too!

I would agree with taking the trans out the bottom. It definitely helps to have a transverse engine support fixture. You can even make one yourself.

i wouldnt install the lsd myself transmission shop would have that job, i found 3-4 guides online to rebuild the obx one, i might give that a shot. but i want this to be reliable for atleast 60k+ miles.

sounds like the only really good lsd is the quafie.

and vic, pm me about the clutch if you want to let it go for cheap
