I turned my car on today and I think my belt is rubbing. Smelled like rubber burning even got a bit of smoke. Whats it cost to get a new belt for a 99 alero?

maybe 25-35 for the belt, and whatever it costs to install it if you dont do it yourself.

i'll bet money that an idler pulley is locked up. look at the engine while running and make sure all the pulley's are turning. a new pulley is cheaper than a new belt, do it soon before the belt breaks and you have to buy both.

oh, and the belt is 18 dollars (for a cheap oem replacement), and a relativley easy install, even for someone not mechanically inclined.

Ok first thing in the morning I well look. It think everything is working just that the belt slipped over to the edge and is rubbing a bit. I can see some rubber that was rubbed off. I don't think the belt has been changed on the car yet. 98,680 KM. I know for sure in the past 2 years its not been changed. Before that I'm not sure. The guy before me that had the car just used it to drive to work and the odd place. 95% of the miles on the car are highway on the 401 and 407. Most of what I added is from 95 and the turn pike.

i thought mine was just rubbing too, i could see like rubber powder (hard to explain) on some stuff, and figured it was rubbing. but it was from the belt travelling over a pulley that wasnt moving, so it was basically sanding the belt down.

although it did sound like i had s/c at high rpm.

whichever it is, lemme know and i'll give you a how-to.

I just went out with a flash light and looked. Everything is turning. The burning has stopped and the belt looks in good shape other then a but or rub marks on it. Now maybe I was mixed up a bit but the sound coming from the belt area could this be the ball bearings?

the bearings in my pulley were screaming, then it locked up. the screaming stoped, and the belt started smoking alot. i had no idea what the screaming was at the time, and when i smelled smoke i thought somethign was seriously wrong, luckily it was just the pulley.

so I should find out what pulley is causing the "screaming" and replace it before I break my belt and am stuck on the side of the road.
