hows come it seems like the cavy with the ecotec is fairly faster than aleros? in this one forum i was reading this guy was running 15.4 with just exhaust. whats up with that. if thats the case i cant wait to see what i will run with exhaust, header and intake. even though i only have an 1/8 mile track around here. but being in the mid to high 9 second range would make me happy. so what do you guys think?

Aleros with the Ecotec make more HP than the cavi. There is another thread about this subject already.

Exactly, even though GM said the cavy/sunfires made the same HP as the alero/grand am, it is apparent that our cars make more power.
There is a thread in here about that, and on my other grand am site there is a huge thread by a cavy driver too complaining that our alero's and Grand ams eat his lighter cavalier alive at the track even though they are supposed to have the same Tranny and HP.

I remember the orignal specs on the alero ECO's were 145hp right before they came out. Then they dropped this to 140 right after. I'm not too sure why. I think the Ions are rated 145hp as well, or atleast the base cobalts will be.

why is it odd? there are many factors other than the engine, mainly the differences in the air box and exhaust.

well this is very interesting to me. so i probably would run 9's on the 1/8 mile with wai, exhaust and header? and would a 5 speed from an 01 cavy fit in my car? or would it need adjusting?

Mostly would be parts and maby a little over the cost of installing a trans.
$500.00 for computer "NEW"
$1000.00 for trans "NEW"
your best guess on the harness
50 bucks for a manual console or so "guessing"
Peddles from a 5 speed I have no clue.
And it is always possible that the auto may be faster than the 5 speed, well atleast easier.

your right about the auto might be faster. because the times i've raced i've won off the line and usually till about 3rd gear or sometimes untill i put it in drive, because i'm power shifting. and at our 1/8 mile track i'll only hit 2nd gear tops at 70 mph.

with an auto ecotec i'm guessing mid to high 10's here in tn.
edit, i didnt notice you said headers.... i'm not sure of the ecotec header gains, but i'm guessing mid-low 10's.

there's a kitted cav here with the ecotec, runs 1+ seconds slower... and i know i have the 3.4, but the 3.4 isnt that much faster than the 2.2 (at least with aleros)
oh, and add at least another 500 to that price for the clutch/plates/flywheel

thanks for all the info guys, but to be honest with you i'm a bit disapointed. stock ecotec high 10's and then $800.00 in to it and down to low 10's. thats not the gain i was looking for. i guess i might as well not spend that much on it

well there's no magic way to increase your speed at a cheap price, forced induction or nos is the only way to go

The auto would be faster if it was programmed right, which out of GM it is not. If it shifter higher and faster, you would be faster, but a manual has more gears, shorter gears, can be driven into redline, and launched better (feather the clutch, etc).
There is also less HP loss from a manual tranny to the wheels then an automatic...I read the percentages somewhere once, but can't recall. It was like 17% vs 23% or something.
