I have been noticing that my key can be removed when the car is still on, and sometimes i dont realize it. Where it doesnt turn off all the way and my interior lights will stay on. My question is, has anyone else has this problem and is it a common problem on the alero? Thanks

Um, no can't say i've ever heard of that one before...I know there was a problem with some older cars when the keys got worn down, but I've never heard of it happening in an alero...
You may want to try a new key and if that doesn't work, you're going to have to change the ignition cylinder and all the lock cylinders to match up some new keys

I think that would be handy when you wanna warm it up in winter and keep it locked while you're in the house, then you don't need to dig out the spare key.

mine does that, i can take the key out anytime......is kinda cool. you do have to have the key to start it though, but can take the key out at any time and lock your doors with the keyless entry!

dont know why it does it, but isnt really an issue right now.

Yeah, I'd call that a feature. I'd love it if my car broke like that

mine does the same thing and a friend of mine has a 2000 grand am and his did the same thing too before he got it fixed. sounds like a common problem with this type of ignition. there's been no problems with anything though....but it comes in handy like cyber said...you can warm up the car and lock the doors without having to worry about getting a spare.

That surprises me that the key will come out with the car still on and the car stay on. I mean that stupid Passlock stuff shuts people cars down even when they use a key. Thats strange.

Well thats the whole thing the passlock system is mostlikely not working that is why he can take the key out without turning the key all the way off. is cool though until all of a sudden you cant shut off your car at all even if you turn the key off and take it out.

Passlock is just a sensor in the switch that senses if the ignition has be messed with or if the key is dirty or something stupid. The key coming out with the car on is just worn parts (IE: Key or ignition switch). I am just wondering how that don't trip the little passlock sensor and cut the fuel off to the car?? However, it is GM so I guess I should not ask questions.
