I was shocked. I have needed a new place to buy fiberglass since moving this summer. Most of the car shops and lowes were charging around fourty dollars for a gallon. Car Quest even had it for 48. Autozone carries it for 24 dollars a gallon. Not bad since I was paying 20 from a marine shop.

What are the prices you are seeing for the actual fiberglass?

I have access to all the stuff that people turn in on the hazardous waste collection days. I got gallons of paint and fiberglass comin out my ass, and an unlimited supply of the hardener as well. I just don't have much of the fiberglass matte, but you don't need much of that stuff anyways right?

Sorry about that. I was writing about resin not fiberglass.

no its not that
there is fiberglass resin, fiberglass matt, and fiberglass hardener
fiberglass matt = is either a special kinda matt u buy, or you can use fleece (thats what i used to make my backseat mold)
Fiberglass resin = is the actual chemical you mix in with a little hardener and pour or brush on the fiberglass matt.
Fiberglass hardener = is a smaller container and you put some fiberglass resin in a tub and pour a little hardener with it and then you mix it up and then put it on the matt after you stapled the shape u want

How does fleese compare to mat? Is it cheaper or easier to work with. Mat may be durable but it comes apart easily when glassing. This also makes for more sanding. Where would be some good locations to purchase fleese?

you can get fleece at any fabric shop, or at walmart, or if you wanna go real cheap go to a salvation army or used clothing shop and just buy some old coats. i thought the strands of fiberglass in the matte actually made the structures alot stronger though and this is why you should use the matte over any material. i also got rolls and rolls of fiberglass tape, it looks like masking tape but it has thin strands of fiberglass that peel off the tape backing. you put this stuff right on the resin after you've put it on your fleece and it adds strength to your enclosure. Then you put more resin ontop of it and keep layering it. the good thing about this tape is its really thin unlike the matte or fleece so it goes on curves really well because its more like a screen or like cheesecloth, then material or matte.

Sounds like a good idea. I will have to try out the tape on the next door panel. Do you have any suggestions on how to layer layer the resin and matt? It falls apart very easily. If I brush on resin and then lay the matt, it doesn't soak through. I have to soak the matt and then layer it onto the form. I just wandered if there would be a more conservative manor for this.

/\ thats where fleece kicks in, just get a brush n soak the fleece...
and btw your strength of the mold doesnt come in the fiberglass, your strength comes in your backfiller

i don't understand why backfiller is so important. The glass strands in the fiberglass matting are for added structural integrity. Think of trying to break a carrot in half as opposed to breaking a piece of celery, the strands make the celery less brittle. Also, i can't remember exactly, but i don't think either of the links on fiberglassing stuff mention anything about doing backfiller for extra strength, i may be wrong tho.

the fiberglass itself is to make a solid shape, the backfiller is what builds the strength becasue its tiger or kitty hair and its there to harden and support the mold from behind

yo guys, hook me up with the fiberglass resin! im about to do a custom enclosure to replace my back seats and need all i can get! what would be the best process to go about doing this project? my preliminary idea was to lay out a design w/ tape and then put some fiberglass mat down, then just brush the fiberglass resin over that? what is the best backfiller and where can i get it? also where do i get those O rings for the subwoofers for the fiberglass enclosures? what im plannin to do is put the subs in the enclosure where the top part of the back seat is, then put the amp on the bottom part....any ideas/suggestions? thanks guys...
