it just lets you know your car is locked, and it sort of acts like an alarm but its fake to scare away any thiefs

That's your car telling you it's locking.

Its simple...its GM's 15 second delay lock feature. When you hit the lock button inside the car once, the car will beep at you. That means you have 15 seconds from the time the last door is closed before the car will lock. if you press the lock button again, the car will lock with no horn beep or light flash.
So for a recap:
Press the button once = chime and 15 second lock delay (horn beep and light flash)
Press the button twice = doors lock immediately (no horn beep or light flash)

its is a factory alarm system that can as an option for your car.there is nothing wrong it is just telling you that your car is locking and unlocking. you should also have the option of a panic button too!

^It's not an alarm. It's "theft deterrant"

heh...I have a '00 GL (yeah, I figured it out...lol) and my lock button doesn't do any of that 15-second stuff. I hit it and it locks the doors. It honks the horn if the doors are closed, but not if the doors are open or if the key is in the ignition.
The "Unlock" button is interesting to me. Once: unlocks the driver side door. Twice: unlocks them all if the second press of the button is done while the lights are still flashing.

Like everybody else says it's a theft deterrant, not an alarm, but with the "passlock" system in the Alero it makes it hard to steal anyway.
Passlock means that the key must be cut perfectly to match the cylinders inside the ignition. If they don't, the fuel gets cut off and the car will not start. The down side it that the key will wear down over time and the "Secruity" light will come on while your driving. When that happens, you have to get a new key cut. Mine did it about a year ago now

hehe...I thought he was talking about the FOB! The switch inside the car does the 15-second thing (which I really didn't know about until yesterday...lol)
Thanks for the key info, ken! I only have one key for my car...I haven't made any spares yet. I think I will soon though. :hide:

Mine locks in 7 seconds, like it says in the manual, did it change throughout the years, cause 15 seconds is way to damn long
