Ok guys... i'm looking a a couple GLS's to buy so i could get the V6 but i just ran across an old friend of my dad's who builds airplanes and poop like that and he said he has an all aluminum 350 chevy engine... aluminum block, heads, forged rods, pistons, ect. he was going to put it in an airplane but it doesn't meet FAA or FFA regulations... (whatever they are called i dunno)... anyway... he is like 75 or so and has been building engines for years and years... so it's a custom job... to the point is there any way it would fit in the engine bay of the alero? and if so how much work would it take to get a tranny to bolt on? i can get this engine cheap so i'll prolly get it even if i can't put it in the ho... mabye i can stick it in a little jet boat... anyway what do you think? thanks!

You will need a new tranny, but I don't know what will bolt up

never say never. I've personally considered torching the body off of the pan and welding new mount flanges to channel it onto something of an older GM chassis that had rwd, like a Vega or something. If you're determined to shoe-horn a v-8 under the fwd setup, then look at the one where someone stuffed a Northstar under a 'ho. I think a caddy fwd tranny would hold up fine, since the STS smoked the vette through the 1/4. Best place to start is in a junk-yard with a tape measure, and start getting some dimensions to see what will fit, etc. If you're gonna do all that though, take the caddy tranny to the local shop and have a manual valve-body put in, to eliminate the need for electronic control of it.

Yeah it's a hard job
Forget about the motor fitting for a second think of the custom drive shaft, new gas tank and custom rear end with custom suspension in the front, for the weight, and the rear, for the rear and drivetrain
If you do it, I suggest a Ford 9" rear and either a 400 Turbo Jet or a 700 RT tranny

they make v8 mounts for the grand am, all you gotta do is provide the motor and drivetrain.

This is obviously something we would all want to see (as a final product) - an Alero with a V8. Is it worth it though? Not to make a long story long... but my old car, a 74 Duster (god I miss that car), had a 318 under the hood for starters... just by being at the right place at the right time, we traded a man with a Chrysler 440 Big Block... Did it fit at first? Hells no, didn't fit to anything... but as the car was being rebuilt from the ground up, we made it work, and it WAS worth it.
Only difference? It was a $500 beater that we rebuilt... an Alero is a lot more complex than an old muscle car. But, if you've got the patience, the money, and the right parts, give'r!

if you had the money required to do this, you wouldn't be doing it in a alero, all these people saying "dont knock him, he can do it!" are way to optimistic. for the amount of time and money, you could buy a much nicer car already fast car
its more than a "tranny and a 9" ford" the chassis wont even work for rwd, not even remotely close to possible. what you'd end up doing is modifying a already rwd powered car to fit the alero shell on top of. but the alero shell wont just bolt on top of a s10 or whatever chassis, mega customization.
get the engine, put it in a different car, get a old cutlass or montecarlo maybe.

you're going to have to modify the subframe, fabricate a tranny tunnel, fabricate mounts for the engine and tranny, new electronics, etc, etc, etc... it can be done, but honestly why an alero.... it won't be streetable, won't be smoggable, it'd turn into a dedicated track car, unless if that is what you're doing... then go for it... it's been done to grand ams many a time.

the only engine i would suggest if you want a v-8 is a northstar, that way it would fit a little easier and its already FWD so it would just be a much easier and cleaner swap, not a ton easier by any means but still better than trying to do a RWD small block or something
