Interior painting

Just wondering what people here use to paint the interior pieces of their nice vehiclesto get the best results without chipping scratching and all that stuff.

I used Testor model paint spray paint (specially made for plastic).... and about 10 coats (no joke) of clearcoat.

The way to do it is fairly simple....
1. remove the parts you want to paint
2. sand them with fine grit sand paper (as fine as you can buy, go to a model shop to get really fine grain) to rough up the surface a bit for better sticking. also to get rid of any oils or cleaning products.
3. depending on the color you want to spray, you might be better off using a few coats of basecoat. I used metallic burgandy, which was a close match to my exterior color, and since it was made for plastics, I didn't use a basecoat.
4. Spray on the main coat IN THIN COATS. I can't stress the importance of painting in VERY THIN COATS, and letting them dry thuroughly in between coats. The more you let it dry, the better it will be at resisting scratching, smearing, and running. Use at least 3 coats of primary color.... or until you feel comfortable with the color.
5. wait till the paint is definately completely dry...
6. spry on a bunch of thin coats of clearcoat. I used 10 coats to make sure it had enough protection for everyday use.
7. Let everything dry (i let it dry for 2 days, and drove around with the dash innards showing)
8. reinstall carefully, not to scratch your paint.

Remember, the more you take your time and paint carefully, the better the end result will be. I rushed through the center console part, and noticed later that I missed a little piece where the radio meets the console... it's barely noticeable, but I wish I had even taken more time to notice that.

Naich i was reading your cardomain site and i was wondering when you mentioned you were painting your car a diff color, why and what color?

Well, I am (probably not this summer because it's my wedding, but next summer most likely) going to repaint my car. I have a GAGT SC/T spoiler that I won in a charity auction at GAP '03 that I need to get painted anyway. Also, from living in New Brunswick for all these years, the car has some dings on the doors and fenders from ppl opening their car doors into my car... there's about 2 on the drivers side, and one on the passenger side. Oh yeah, and a year and 1/2 ago, someone rear-ended me, and I never had the bumper repainted... there is a couple scratches in the back from that.

None of these things are very visible, but they annoy me.

I'm also planning on doing custom ghost-painting. I want to keep a similar shade of metallic burgandy as the main color, but I am going to design a ghost pattern.

What kind of pattern are you thinking of, Nick? Maybe something to match the design of your new rent-a-racecar?

and another question if you dont mind, what do i do if i painted somthing like a blue color and i dont like the color of it, do i suck it up and go buy new ones from the dealer or do i use somthing to take it off, and if so what and how?

i used krylon fusion (made for plastic and it's cheap).. make sure u use a sh!tload of clear coat though...lol if not it might just end up being sticky in the sun..lol at least it did that here in south tx

no, once you paint it, you're probably going to have to repaint it if you don't like it. Either that, or get new pieces from a junk yard or ebay... you won't be able to get it back to stock because chemical strippers would probably change the plastic to a faded grey color, and you probably won't be able to get all the color off.

krylon fussion, I didnt clearcoat and mines just fine, and im down in FL

tru test is the middle of the summer tho, cause Idid mine proly round oct.

yea i made the mistake of painting my actual vents and not the surrounding pieces with krylon fusion, excessive heat coming out melted the things

i think you mean PINK naich, not burgandy

i have some small chips in the current pieces inside my car, i have clearcoated these pieces already though... if i take them out and respray them then re clearcoat them will this work to touch the chips up or is there a better way i should be going about this?

you'll need to sand them before you paint again. and feather edge the chips out.
