Alright... so I give my car to my brother in August. It was normal when I gave it to him.

I came home for break and decided to give the Alero a drive (man do I miss how easy it is to steer that thing... I was shocked at easy it was to move that wheel). Well I turned the car on and heard a "scrape" sound. As I got down to my driveway I gave it a little gas and it made the scrape sound again. So I kept an ear out for the sound. Every time I started acclerating I heard the sound, but when away when I got to 5-10MPH. When going on the freeway I brought it up to 65. During the 2500-3900 RPM range the scraping sound is continous. It sounds pretty bad.

I have the 2.2L ecotec with a 4 speed auto. 2002 GL.

Anybody have any ideas or clues to what it might be?

Thanks

Thats what I thought at first too, but the sound happens when the car turns on. It also occurs when the car is in Park and you give the car a little gas.

Looks like the problem was the heat sheild for the exhaust.

My driveway has a 'hump' or 'berm' at the top as you enter/exit the driveway. It scrapes the heat shield every time due to the low clearance.

It sounds like of you slid the flat side of a metal yard rake over an open weave metal sidewalk grate. Can't describe it in words, but that is the best 'visual' i can give.

It's easy to see and inspect. If there are no bends, folds, tears, or fresh scrape marks, then at least you can eliminate it as a suspect.
