Easiest way to hook up an A/F guage is to buy the pigtail from PFYC.com and plug it in. one of the O2 sensors is right under the coil, on the 3400 motor. If you don't wanna buy the pigtail, find the sensor plug, it will have 4 wires on it, take the purple wire and spice into it.
Volts is easier. Pull out the radio, and find the igntion wire. It's yellow. Hook the main wire into that and there's your volts. You can also hook into the lighting there too. It's the orange wire.
There are 2 yellow wires behind the radio, one is for one of the speakers. I believe the wires you are looking for are on the right side of the radio.

or just plug the volt one into the "ignition" fuse on the driver's side fuse panel...

I believe all GM cars made after a certain date have a 4 wire O2 sensor hardness.
On a 2.4 it's probably in the front of the motor.
The upstream is in the exhaust header, the downstream is after the cat

which one is better to tap into? the upstream or downstream?

hook into the upstream which is on the exhaust manifold.
on 99 the wire in the factory harness is purple but on 00-01 they use a 2 wire O2 so not sure which wire to tap into being neither is purple. you would need to determine which one was the actual signal wire for the PCM.

3 wires on the guage, one is for the lighting, one goes to the O2 sensor to read and one is for ground.

This is a pic of the Pigtail from PYFC.com. (it's under the Grand Am section) The purple wire sticking out is the one you would splice into without this. With this, just hook onto the extra wire ;)

If I just use the stock one I find it right behind the engine correct. To the left of my fuse box.
