does it do it when ur braking or just when ur crusing. if u have the brake down iven the slightest and its doing it, its prolly the rotors

What kind of tires do you have??? and how much wear is on them?
dadirtybulldog

it shakes when braking and cruising... my alero has 105,000 miles on it and i've never changed the stock gm rotors... i'm thinking they could be the problem... i have Kumho Ecstas p225 50r16... pratically brand new....??????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????

Shaking while driving most likley is a balancing issue. Have the tech look for a possible bent wheel also, or out of round tire or tires.
Shaking while braking is from the rotors. It doesn't take much runnout on our rotors to make the petal pulsate when braking. Have them measured to see if they're too thin. Probably need to be replaced.

sounds like the rotors, like he said have them measure, since you HAVE to replace them, Id say go with some cross drilled ones

let me clarify, when i say shake.... i mean the steering wheel shakes violently, as you can see i've tried to fix this many ways and nothing worked... the last time it was at the mechanic was for this same problem, i was driving it home and it started to shake so bad i had to pull over and park it..... the mechanic said that my lugs had broken off, out of five he said i had one left, shoot that sounds pretty dangerous, right?.... right.... i know tell me about it..... he said he fixed it... true... it did fix the shaking somewhat for a little while, but here i am again with the same freaking prob... as far as i can tell me lugs are fine... i simply hate having to rely on what the mech says.... he said he put all new lugs in, i can't tell, i just know on that tire i'm missing all the chrome lug nuts.... that sux bigtime...

rotors man. i put off changing mine once cuz it was winter and if i was going 60ish and braked it was like holding a freakin vibrating steering wheel. it was horrible. change those rotors and my as well do brakes to since ur craps gonna be all torn apart and it will be sooo much nicer

if its doing this while not hitting the brake at higher speeds it can be the axle as we,,...i had to have mine replaced.

You have 105,000 miles on the stock rotors??????
For you do an insane amount of highway driving?????
When my rotors were jacked up it only shook/shiddered when braking.
Sounds like you have something more serious. Especially if you're throwing lugs off.
Do yo uhave aftermakret wheels? Are they 5x115 or are they the 5x114.3's?

Mine did shake bad after they fixed my car after an accident and I had to bring the car get diagnosed. I could feel the floorboard throughout the car shake and the gas pedal felt like it was gonna fly out, and the steering wheel did some shaking too. I had to get a new bearing and hub. Maybe a new wheel arm could help, too. Go get it diagnosed. Those are usually free....if not insurance covers it. Tell them u hit a duck or something...hehe.

check yeaman what voodoo said.. what wheels u got? thats not the brakes.. they wont shake like that when the brakes arent applyed...
Sounds like something more serious... what wheel is it ??
sounds more like a driveshaft, or wheel,.. not JUST the rotors for shizzle.....

the tires are Kumho "ecsta" P225 50R16, and i have american eagle rims... i not sure if they're 5x115 or 5x114.3's..... it's only the one tire, it also pulls to the right....

you might want to have you alignment checked too especially if it is pulling to the right. if the alignment is off really bad or something in the front end is really wore it can cause a vibration or pull.

My car was recently pulling to the left at freeway speeds. I had just had my steering rack and toe link replaced, so naturally I thought it was the alignment. Turns out, one of the wheel bearings was too tight? So it may be your wheel bearings...

i just had the wheel bearing replaced on that side...i'd say about six months ago.... car was doing it before then... something is definately screwed with that tire because my tire tread is wearing extremely fast, only one front right tire.... i don't know, i'm just afraid i'm gonna be driving somewhere and my tire's gonna fall off. :( :( :( ;)

can someone tell me why it would shake at certain speed (between 60-80), then when i pass 80 it stops....????...

First off, forget the brakes, that's not your problem. It wouldn't just kick in at 60mph. And i don't think it is a bent rim, because you would feel that the whole time during driving aswell. Are you using any kind of spacers with your rims? Did you torque the rims down enough? Because that is probably the reason why your last 4 studs broke before. I would definitely have another mechanic check out the car. Second opinions matter!!!

yea i agree with stealth its most likely a wheel issue, find out what lug pattren you have, and retorque

about 1 1/2 years ago i was driving, doing about 25 and the phone started ringing, so i answered the phone in the process of making a left turn, when i looked up it was too late and i hit the curb, only with my front right wheel... it broke my rim and popped my tire, my rim was ruined... ever since then that tire seems to shake... it's only that tire throwing the lugs too.... it also seems now that when i slow down from 70mph it shakes more violently (just letting off the gas, not braking)... again, i can pass 85ish and the shaking appears to almost vanish...????... the car pulls hard to the right, even after an alignment... the car at times feels "shakey" or loose when cornering... feels almost as if the tire "wobbles" when driving... comments please???

somethings prolly bent outta shape, have you take it off and carefully looked at everything for any bends, cracks, or anything and compared it to the side that you know is fine. With something like that I think you should be able to see a problem.

wow have you got some front end problems
now iam stabbin at this; maybe your need hub centric rings
if you had all the work done and still a vibration maybe the rims you have do call for hub centric rings
if your throwin lug nuts it might be it

05-11-2004, 09:47 AM
Is it possible that it's the hub? There was another post about this where the hub grins a bit. Mine is starting to go. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow, My wheel shakes a bit around 60, but that just started

05-11-2004, 10:42 AM
but i thought we said he had them replaced
he`s throwin lug nuts got to be needing hub centric rings
iam just guessin maybe it`s a good one
let`s ask matt fuller he`s the suspension brake god

05-11-2004, 11:12 AM
yea he did say he replaced the hub.... hub would get worse at higher speeds but you would hear it going 40 or 50ish and it wouldn't stop affter 85mph ish

but if it is the rings, why would only the one wheel be vibrating?????

i did replace the hubs.... there is no noise coming from the wheel

05-11-2004, 12:49 PM
I agree with bdyman, it has to be hub centric rings.
The reason why only one wheel does it is because it is on wrong or messed up. My friend had this problem with rims he ordered from Tire Rack.
dadirtybulldog
05-11-2004, 12:52 PM
could it not be a severely warped/bent rotor on that side, you know from me hitting the curb????????.... if it is the rings, should i only put it on the one tire, or all tires???
j-work
05-11-2004, 01:04 PM
Let me get this right you have the hub centric rings and don't have them on?
No, if the rotor was bent it should shake all of the time.
dadirtybulldog
05-11-2004, 01:15 PM
i do NOT have rings... didn't think i needed them.... i had the rims now for over a year, at that time i didn't know about hubcentric rings, and the dealer never mentioned it.... car slightly shakes all time, but really noticible at higher speeds...

It probably wont hurt to get the hub centric rings just in case. The plastic ones are only about $35.
You can get them here:

Ohh and i don't think rotors bend..... they can warp over time, but from a sudden crash like that, they'd either break or not.
Because if they did bend anymore then about an 1/4 of an inch, you'd hear the most god awful sound in the world while driving, not to mention have tremendous braking problems.

i guess you're right.... i didn't look at it that way... thanks

This is definetly the fact that you need hubcentric rings.. i jus put rims on and mine shakes between 100km/120.. which is im guessin the same as 60-80...
