How Hard Is It To Change The Hub Assembly 04 Alero 15inch? FRONT PASSANGER

front or rear? rear is 4 bolts holding the hub/bearing assembly on. front you have the bolts, plus the large hub nut and you have to press the axle out of the hub.

Speaking of hubs, I am trying to get the rear hub/bearing off my spare knuckles so I can start assembly of the new stuff and god dammit I can't get it off. Took the bolts out, but it doesn't want to budge. Even the BFH won't remove it. All the stuff I have says it's only 4 bolts....anybody got any ideas? I've changed the front before, never done the back.

Slide hammer is your friend on the rears. The BFH works well on the fronts but I would not use the slide hammer there for fear of separating the cv.

It's not real hard but it helps if you have access to an impact hammer.

Theres a how to around the forums somewhere search wheel bearings

Also note the $20 35mm socket with 1/2" breaker bar will work on the front axle nuts.

Slide hammer duly noted. Already have the socket. And I have a BFP, a nice 2' long 2" dia. steel pipe with a 90 elbow on one end, which gets me plenty of leverage to break loose those tight nuts and bolts. And when not being used as a tool, it fits nicely down by the side of the driver's seat in my Jeep, in case I'm having a "Falling Down" moment during my daily commute

Crap I have a 32mm socket, but I guess I will look in dad's tool chest for a 35mm. That is a lot of cash for one socket you will never use again. (unless you have a lot of friends with grand ams and aleros)

35mm will not work and I doubt your dad will have one. That nut is very tight and 3mm too big will round it off. Spend the money, you are still cash ahead than if you had the dealer do it.

Worked perfect on mine! 32 is to small.

I have the first version of spindle nuts.

the socket for the axle nut is a free rental tool from autozone...no need to buy it.

It's worth buying if you plan on keeping the car. I am on my 6th wheel bearing. It is getting rediculous.

Dad only has SAE sockets, not metrics that big. So will a 1"5/16 really work? He has sockets for his tractors that go up to 2"

The two stores I looked at had 34mm sockets and 36 but not 35...

yeah our system at advance auto says 1"5/16 and my step dad has his own shop and he said the same

cherrington17

the how to will work. you'll see what it means. its just fitting around the axel.... but it still comes out.

the hard part is (being in WNY) the bolts will probably be super rusted. be ready for a fight.

it's easy as pie! and my stock nut was a 35 mm i think... but the new nut that comes with it is closer to a 36...

Use copious amount of PB Blaster on the hub bolts. Mine were seized so hard they rounded off even with the PB. MN and ND winters for ya. I had to pound a 1/2" socket on them so tight i had to throw it away when I was done. They came out then.

so that was so easy its not funny i did both front with the skf not bad. 2 hours both sides done not bad for first time. so i have a question my passager side seems to be grinding when i apply the brake pedal its not real bad but these are new brakes i must have done something idk what i could have done though i hung the caliper i made sure to brake before i drove to get the piston pushed back in so idk what could have happened?

Told ya it was easy. If the bolts come out, its cake.

might just be breaking in the new ones. grinding noise, or grinding feeling?

irondiezl3
03-16-2010, 11:26 PM
just noise just passanger side well they were new last month sorry i should of been more specific yea i had a harder time changing pads out then changing these bearings but ive heard horror stories for me a few taps of a hammer and they poped right out! yea so the gringing is about 90 percent noise 10 percent feel only when pedal is being presses and it slows down with the wheel slowing down.

i'd disassemble it all, see if the sliders are working, lube it all up, be sure your anti-rattle clip is in place... etc.

its possible on reassembly, you over looked something.

irondiezl3

i bet its the anti rattle clip is it hars to replace the slider pins i was thinking about replacing and lubing

just to comment, i have a 36mm socket and it works aswell, just has a little play in it but works and doesnt round off anything

sliders just pull out, and push in. (pull out, grease, push in) and the anti rattle just pops outta place, and clips back in. really easy.

My old hub was so frozen in there, that after using the hub puller it ripped the bearing in two, still leaving 1/2 of the bearing on the axle. Had to take a chisel to the back of it to get it out.

wow am i lucky mine came out when i loosened the three bolts off the knuckle almost on their own especially passanger side but the were shot when i spun them it sounded like a screaching cat.
