Ok, so on Feb 9, 2010, I purchased a fully loaded 2004 Alero, I was wondering what I can do to get the best MPG possible in this car because I deliver Pizza for a Job, and to make a car payment I need to cut on fuel costs...Any ideas?

This is the motor fresh off the lot.....

take things slow. dont pin it off the line. basically drive like a granny.

i run full synthetic oil. and you can also get a wai that supposed to help. have you tires inflated properly. my tires max out at 45psi, but i normally run them at 44 or so.

clean air filter. new plugs/wires if need be.

44, you're gonna get HEAVY wear in the center

Thanx for the tips, I have never raced my cars, I like to keep them going in a healthy fashion, and by the way, can you explain the WAI Situation? Also, can you point me in the direction to some cheap and easy engine dress-up kits please? Im new to the Alero scene, but im liking it....the first thing I thought when I seen her, was i gotta drive it, and I fell in love from there, so i plan on treating her like my woman, just better.

Enable DFCO in the tune and adjust it properly. :)

j/k you won't be doing that anytime soon but that's the way to signficantly bump up MPG. Deceleration fuel cut off, shuts off injectors when you let off the gas instead of still targeting a 14.6:1 AFR.

yeah that sounds great, but u lost me at enable DFCO, perhaps not right away, but an explain would be nice of what you are telling me for future upgrades XD

My MPG went down the shitter when i added a Wai.

I got better MPG when I added the CAI. in the winter the limit PSI is 45 I am running 42 and in the summer the max psi is 49 and I run 45PSI.

i run 42 lbs on 44 max tires and have no odd wearing

max means maximum tire can safely withstand. you should always inflate 5-8 psi less to account for heat increasing the pressure

you always saying this, always baffles me. it just doesn't follow the laws of physics... at all.

me too........my friggin 2.4 CHUGS gas. I did the odometer/full tank calculations and I'm getting 13.9 mpg. :(

then there is something majorly wrong with your car because my friend who had a 2.4 grand am ran it to 155,000 on the original spark plugs with gear lube as oil and it had no overdrive and it still got 23 mpg with him driving it like a nascar.

I think I have shitty/dirty injectors. I'm running some injector cleaner on this tank (and probably the next one, too) just to try to get back to normal. it doesn't seem to be a bad spark, but my exhaust does smell like gas.

*could also be the fact that it's cold as a witch's tit here and I only drive it really short distances.

winter gas doesn't help mileage, my car gets on average about 5mpg less in the winter time on the highway.

and here is a wai.

it's even a decent price

doubt it has much to do with winter gas. colder air = denser air = more gas using in engine. mpg always drops in the winter. less traction too.

up here winter gas has different additives in it. stop it from freezing at such.

And to make it more volatile, yea?

AlbinoMonkeyRat

could be the winter gas too. when I calculated my 1 tank mileage in the summer, I was at about 21 mpg. but that was less than 3k miles ago. So I could just be due for a total system clean out (oil and air filters, injectors and spark plugs cleaned/replaced...anything else?)

that sounds almost rational.. except for the fact that gas freezes (depending on type) between -120F and -240F.

and that kinda cold doesn't exist outside of a lab.

its all the enviroment your car runs in, that changes your mpg.

in the cold, people drive slower, idle longer, get less traction, have colder air, have more components running (defosters and such) all adds up, when you calculate this kinda stuff. typically we weigh more too.

That better not be a power wire going into the fender!! :(

yeah, oil, injector cleaner, air filter, plugs, fuel filter (maybe?), and go from there... also make sure your tires are properly inflated.

This is a very active forum, which is nice considering I'm a "newb" to owning and caring for/modding an Alero.

and on the power wire there is a grommet in the firewall to run your power wire through not the fender...

I know this is a later post but I did not want to create a new one for the same subject. I have been tallying my mileage after the new exhaust and I have found that with my v6 3400 with a CAI, high flow cat and pacesetter exhaust I am able to reach 28-29 mpg with a MIX of city and highway driving. My driving style is more reserved but with the new exhaust I do flex Angel a little bit more to enjoy the sound. The mileage is even better with the increased aggression. Just wanted to pass it on.

Just because it says "max capacity 45" on the tire does not at all mean that's how much you put it. If you look at the manufacturer's suggested pressure (usually a sticker on the inside of the driver's door (unless you have a German car), it says anywhere between 28 and 35 cold. Already putting 35 cold is too much. For best MPG keep it at 32lbs.

i never had a problem running my tires at 44psi. my old car i had them almost up to 50psi. but those were 10ply truck tires on it.

and the manufactures sticker works great for tires that came with the car. but different tires run different psi's.

but i can see what your saying. so people should keep them down.

i recently purchased some good year fuel max tires. And a set of e3 spark plugs. and just installed my wai. i'm hoping for some better mpgs!

The factory inflation pressure is for a mix of comfort, handling and economy.

I myself run about 41 in the front, or else I tend to wear the outside edges a bit faster.
