It seems as though my oil pump is about to give up on me. So the question is, how difficult would it be to replace the pump? Oh,and yes I did a search and only got 2 hits. Now, I'm very mechanically inclined so any how to's are welcome and greatly appreciated. I plan to do this Saturday morning. So again, all help and advice is greatly appreciated...

I never did an oil pump on an "N" body before, but I did it on my 85 "B" body. Actually I replaced it, before the engine went in the car.

As for the N, it doesn't seem like any thing runs under the pan, so it should be pretty straight forwward. It's just a matter of getting ALL the oil out, like whatever's hanging on the crank, pump, pick-up, etc. That stuff will be dripping on you the entire time

Timing cover needs to come off to get the pan off. I think it is possible but not fun with the motor in the car. Second I know the oil pump is driven off the cam but I have no idea how the two gears align, meaning I am not sure if the pump gear will come out with the cam in the car. Someone else may know the answer to that one.

There is a (hex?) shaft between the oil pump and the oil pump drive gear. That's a non-issue. Getting those side bolts that go into the main caps on the backside between the pan and the trans, that's a different story.

All that assuming this is a 3400.

Sorry, I've got the twin cam LD9. Should have mentioned that. Still haven't had a chance to get in there. The weather sucked and I have to work outdoors.... just the fact that the water pump was slightly easier than performing open heart surgery while drunk, blind folded, hanging upside down and with one arm tied to your ankle, I can assume it's not going to be any easier. But none the less, I still need advice.

Wow, really? So many technical people on here and this is all I get? Thanks to those of you that posted. I very much appreciate it.

Seems like people don't like to help out around here...

Probably no body has had to do it on these cars before, I've never heard about one going out until yours just now, it's a pretty simple mechanical part, and thus isn't very prone to failing.
