Redog 04-07-2005 09:04 PM

I've been looking for a way to increase airflow into the CAI on the track. Since the filter is behind the washer fluid bottle.

Redog 04-07-2005 09:07 PM

I starting taking out the fender liner to get a more straight thru flow, and it's been working pretty good.

But I bought this on eBay for $22.00 shipped. The bulk of the cost was shipping however :glare:

turtles_ride 04-07-2005 09:07 PM

you leaving that plastic piece off?

Redog 04-07-2005 09:09 PM

The kit You only need the pipe and a the clamps

Redog 04-07-2005 09:12 PM

Had to cut the grommet to fit. The 3" side I use the downpipe on the intake. The narrow end was too small so I cut it off

Redog 04-07-2005 09:13 PM

It's a tight fit but you can get it on the pipe and clamp it down :thumb:

Redog 04-07-2005 09:14 PM

typical intake. leaving enough grommet to connect

Redog 04-07-2005 09:15 PM

These holes are useless

Redog 04-07-2005 09:16 PM

I know it look ghetto but you wouldn't be seeing it anyway

Redog 04-07-2005 09:17 PM

CAI ready to connect to

Redog 04-07-2005 09:18 PM

Gotta take out the fog light for it to work.

I do it anyway for better airflow, but...

Redog 04-07-2005 09:22 PM

To fit it in there, you gotta take it out.

So this is defently a "Track Only" mod. I don't leave the liner out on the street either.

This is only my "cap" filter. I use a clean, mesh top, filter for the track. It only has 200 miles or so on it

Redog 04-07-2005 09:23 PM

Looking good :thumb:

Redog 04-07-2005 09:24 PM

:thumb: And will flow good :thumb:

14's here I come :popc1:

BlackJack 04-07-2005 09:28 PM

looks like it will work in a pinch. Yeah, the tape was ghetto, but ya know what? Yer right....nobody gonna see it! So, rock on >8)

Redog 04-07-2005 09:32 PM

I was going to get those little breather filters for the MINI cooper intake I bought, it has the stems but it's only 2.5"

The PT Cruiser one is 3"

mike2002 04-07-2005 09:47 PM

so is it right behind the foglight?

hate to always be the barer of bad news, but the longer a intake is, the less low end you have. the point is to have as short of a intake as possible, but as far away from heat as possible, because you loose velocity

but the lack of low end may still help at the track if you pick up top end

Redog 04-07-2005 10:55 PM

^^ Yeah I thought of this, but it's only a $22 investment, so I won't be crying the blues if it don't work

Oldsmopimp 04-07-2005 11:25 PM

top secret?? I modified my intake just like that just so it fit better. Kyle at Dr. Speed sent me extra piping and couplers for free, so thats what I did.

U should get one of those typhoon K+N filters, that are open on the sides like normal, but also on the top.......which is how it faces the fog light opening. Get more of the "Ram air effect", if u are concerned bout air flow.

true that. but i was kinda thinking today. does a CAI make that much of a difference over a WAI. i mean, the EGR is pushing fresh exhuast gases into the UIM right next to the TB. so all the incoming air, is heated up no matter what. i mean if anything a CAI will inhale a few degree's colder i think. i dunno im just throwing thoughts out.

smokinAMD 04-08-2005 12:04 AM

Probably doesnt even make a damn bit of difference and you lost a foglight doing it. Not worth it.

-Alero- 04-08-2005 12:08 AM

^ Denied

Well, the EGR only lets those exhaust gases into the intake during cruising situations, not at idle or at WOT.

^^ learn somethign new everyday....

Crolero 04-08-2005 02:41 AM

Looking good Redog, i hope it gets you into the 14's. gl, when you gonna test it at the track?

mike2002 04-08-2005 04:21 AM

my cai is always comming undone, i open my hood and see it disconnected, usually between the pipes by the battery, once it came off the TB. no matter how hard i crank those clamps, it comes undone

you have 3 choices....

go get smaller couplers that fit tighter....

or if they are the right size...

go to the store and buy some cheap hair spray and sand paper. go home, take out your CAI and remove the couplers and clean the pipe with soap and water and dry it off. scuff up the area where the couplers go and clamp on to and then clean up the pipes again.

when you go to install it again, spray a little bit of hair spray onto the pipe where the coupler will go and a tiny bit on the inside of the coupler. assemble while the hair spray is still wet and tighten the clamp.

let it set for 15 mins after your done to give the hair spray time to dry and become sticky.

i promise it works for most situations. it helps hold 12 psi of boost in my car.

or if you dont want to do either of those...

you can have a bead pressed or welded around the tip of the piping. when you clamp it down the ends are bigger than that clamp, so it cant come out. you can also achieve this effect with a small hammer and some blunt force trauma to the pipe. you basically just need to flare the ends

germ 04-08-2005 08:57 AM

oh yea, and you should make sure that the CAI is supported and not hanging. when it "hangs" unsupported, the couplers are the items that fail first.

I'm going to a different track next week pending no rain for a T&T. I'll make a run with a regular CAI and one with my modded CAI

thanks for the ideas. the cai does just hang, i was kind of thinking that was the reason. the last time i put it back on i put the ultra dragon lock on it, the clamps are really really tight.

if not i think im going to support it somehow, i know the opening it goes through to the wheel well is pretty tight, i might put some silicone there, or expanding foam...somthing to put some pressure in there and hold it in

Str8tFKNuUP 04-09-2005 12:38 AM

I'm a engine newb, how much more hp or how much faster does the car go with one of these new intakes vs the stock intake? Is it noticeable in everyday driving? or is it only noticeable when your trying to run the tracks?

So you mean to tell me that everytime you go to the track, you are going to put the ghetto intake in, and take out a fog light?

Oldsman 04-09-2005 12:14 PM

even if you only gives you a couple thousands faster a drag racer would.

mike2002 04-09-2005 08:25 PM

but a drag racer wouldn't be a alero.... :hide:

aleroguy83 04-09-2005 10:32 PM

why not? i think it would be awesome to see a tube chassied, glassed bodied alero in the pros. how awesome would that be

I think he already pulls out the foglight when he goes to the track, it's posted somewhere. I read it somewhere if my memory is right. Usaully it's not but I think so this time.

OrangeALero 04-10-2005 09:17 PM

common reddog..ive seen the huge list of mods you have, u obviously are a car guy

i am dissapointed to see some of the original plastic tubing from the air system still dangling in there above your filter...it was like two screws..clean it up ''dog''
