Fiberglass

I'm wondering if a phenolic spacer could be replaced with fiberglass? I could get the resin and some sheets of fiberglass, stack them up until they get to about 1/4 inch thick, then cut to size. Any thoughts?

Hmmmm, mdf?

wood product - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-density_fiberboard

usually used for building speaker boxes....

Beholder88 03-13-2009 04:22 PM

Wow, didn't even think of that. That's about as basic as it gets.

kwhauck 03-13-2009 04:24 PM

and as cheap, problem is replacement, he replaces his about every 6 months, but that' no biggie, i think my top end only usually makes it about 3 months everytime I reassemble....

Beholder88 03-13-2009 04:26 PM

Well, I can see how it wears out so fast, being wood and all.

kwhauck 03-13-2009 04:28 PM

not so much the wood you worry about, it is if the paint starts to chip, that's usually not healthy for an engine, not really bad, but not great either.....

when i grenaded my piston, i only had half of it in the motor still, the other half went out the tailpipe.....lol

Pretty much, and I do not have any of that, except CAD. I've got some connections to that kind of equipment, and it helps that I can get material through where I work.

Fiberglass wont hold up to the heat, period.

Beholder88 03-13-2009 07:50 PM

I'm not talking about the same kind of fiberglass used for body work. There are different grades of the stuff. Like I said, I need to look into it some more.

I made 1/2 inch spacers out of basswood, sprayed color on and urethane varnished 'em. had them about three years now.

kwhauck 03-13-2009 11:07 PM

i could have sworn it was mdf and that you had changed them several times, well i'll be damned.......
