Ignition Switch Relearn

When you do a relearn on the ignition switch, does it start over every time as if the switch were brand new? Or does the data from the initial relearn always stay in the switch?

You should only have to do it once. Only when one of the components is replaced.

CactusWill 03-24-2009 01:20 PM

That wasn't quite what I was asking, but almost.

So the first time you relearn the switch, does that relearn stay there permanently, or can it be relearned again as if it were a new switch?

Cliff8928 03-24-2009 01:26 PM

Hmm...

The relearn is performed after the "password" between the passlock cylinder and BCM no longer coincide with each other.

When the relearn is performed, the new "password" is stored and the old one is erased from the memory.

As long as the "password" matches between the BCM and the Passlock cylinder, then no relearn procedure is required.

That is still not answering my question

Cliff8928 03-24-2009 01:39 PM

Then what is your question?

CactusWill 03-24-2009 01:48 PM

I asked it twice already

So, you wonder if a used switch can be relearned..... ?

Yep, pretty sure on that. If you take a switch that has been used, and go to relearn it on another car/bcm, it should relearn just fine... you just have to go through the 10 minute procedure again.

So i think the answer to your question would be yes, it can be relearned again as if it were a new switch.

CactusWill 03-24-2009 02:04 PM

Thank you commanche.

comanche 03-24-2009 04:06 PM

Anyone disagree with me? I have done basically the same thing, with a used bcm and a used ignition module, i didn't need a new ignition module when i installed a used bcm, i just had to go through the relearn procedure.

wearetheromans85 03-24-2009 06:40 PM

just bypass the passlock crap. no relearn or security light ever again.

Cliff8928 03-25-2009 01:40 AM

Ohh.. I was misunderstanding the question. The switch doesn't have any part of the learning in it. It's all controlled by the BCM.

So to answer your question:

"Will my passlock still function correctly if I replace my ignition lock cylinder with a used one".

The answer is yes.

That was not my question.

My real concern, was that when that I replaced the ignition switch with a new one, that it was not relearned correctly and I wondered if that ruined the switch, or if the switch can be relearned again as if it were new.

Cliff8928 03-26-2009 01:50 AM

Either way, the switch does no learning. The BCM learns the switch.

CactusWill 03-26-2009 01:59 AM

Thank you. That helps alot more than, rewording and trying to assume what the original question really was. LOL
