Slow start... timing belt? (already changed plugs/wires)
2 part question
Around what mileage should the timing belt be replaced on the 3400?
And lately, my car has been slow to start (turning over a few times instead of just firing up immediately like she used to)
I just changed plugs/wires, thought that was the most likely culprit but still the same... what else could it be? (hence my first question)

first : there is no t-belt on te LA1... it's a chain... you should know what is is is you got those cars >> 1958 Super 88 Holiday Coupe & 1970 Cutlass S
second : defective plugs/wires causes misfires... not slow starting condition...
start with the obvious have your battery checked 1st, check all your positive and ground wires 2nd, and measure the amounts of amp that your starter draws when cranking...

i had a similuar issue when i was running my 3400, i belive it was a stickey idle control valve, i just did a seafoam treatment to it and the engine ran like it was new, then a few months later i bent a valve trying to to a valve stem seal job and just tossed a 3500 in it instead

he may not be refering to how "fast" the engine turns over, but maybe how long it takes to start as in maybe a few extra cranks. i have seen a tune up help this problem before
STILL test the battery. also how about air filter and fuel filter?

If it is cranking and not starting and you smell some gas (maybe or maybe not) check into the fuel pressure regulator going bad.

I also want to know if it's just turning over slowly just because it's cold (and if so try synthetic oil and check your battery's age).

Yeah this ^ it used to fire up in 2 or less revolutions, now it cranks awhile before starting
Battery was replaced less than a year ago but I guess I can check it anyway, but again -- it's not that its turning over slowly, just taking to long to start
Just changed the air filter when I did the plugs/wires (+ oil & filter et al)
Fuel filter is something I hadn't thought of though...
Thanks for all the replies BTW (I work retail so this time of year took me awhile to check back)

prime the fuel pump a few times before starting by turning the key on for a few seconds and then back off, and doing this a few times. If this helps you have a problem with fuel delivery, which would probably either be a fuel pump wearing out or a problem with the regulator.
