you arent going to see much power increase if any out of any muffler. since you have the 3400 go with the 40, it sounds better IMO.

Depends on your set up.
If you are doing a single, 40, duals 80.
Just had an 80 put on my car, and got pulled over for it (no ticket)

Flowmaster 80. It's loud because I have full 2.5 inch exhaust on the car, headers back
This pic is with my SLP on the car, the Flowmaster looks the same way, but I will be posting new pics soon!

I think the 80 is the way to go for either single or dual setups. The part number for the single 80 is 52580 and the dual 80 is 42583. The 80 should fit within the space for the original muffler a little better.

^^ This is true, the 40 will fit but it's either going to be a lot of piping, or if the guy puts it in straight it's very tight to the rear lower control arm

ok i go to get some estimates today and one guy says that the 80 wont fit my car, but said he would put the flowmaster 40 on my car for $180, but do nothing but just the installation. i left there and went to another place and he told me it would fit, but would cost $330 for removing the resinator and putting the exhaust in. seems very high to me but i want to know what you guys got your for. and does anyone have a picture of the underside of there car to show how the muffler sits under the car. thanks

^^ Did that come with a tube of KY?
The 80 fits perfectly since it is a sideways mounted muffler, they do make an 80 with single in/out
look here http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/80_series.html and take notice to the last muffler on the bottom right model number 52580, the guy may have been refering to number 42583 which WILL fit, but requried modifaction to the rear bumper to do it right.
I paid $160 to have my 80 installed and I bought it from the shop that did it. It's $80 from Summit or Jegs and a $10 handling fee and the shop charges about $60 to $80 to install so it was only a few buck more to just get it from them.
I can work on getting pics, may take a few days

if the guy was talking about removing the resonator he quoted you 330 for the whole exhaust. THats a fair price.

doesnt seem to bad, but im gonna respond with a question of my own here (sorry if it seems like im jacking your thread lol)
ive just got back from dropping my car off at the shop and here is what the mech said. what he is wanting to do is run the 2.25" pipe from the cat to the muffler and i asked him if it was possible to run it from the manifold to the cat then from the cat to the muffler and he said he could but there would be little to no gain at all if he did it that way........is he full of crap and is trying to avoid work or is he right and it really doesnt matter?

that is strange. The more parts of the exhaust that you increase in size (to a certain extent) is going to help with power. I dont understand where he would get the idea that only a cat-back system would help power. correct me if im wrong, but its just what i think. by the way, isnt the factory pipes on the alero 2 inch?

i think you are talking about putting in a bigger down pipe? i cant see that would do a whole lot without headers. you are the one that is full of crap lawl
just get a cat-back like everyone else.

to be perfectly honest jon, i have no idea what that consists of dude. ive read about it a few times but cant seem to wrap my head around it
EDIT: Cat-back (also cat back and catback, and more recently axle back) refers to the portion of the exhaust system from the outlet of the catalytic converter to the final vent to open air. This generally includes the pipe from the converter to the muffler, the muffler itself, and the final length of pipe to open air.
never mind i got it, i love google. if that info there is right, then thats whats being done to my car as we speak ^_^

Cat back works fine, only do in fornt of the cat if you get headers
