Ecotec

Hello. I am fairly new to the domestic scene. I am a Honda man, but I now have a 99 4 door auto GL with 2.4. I am wondering if there is an Ecotec that will bolt up with little to no modification.

simply put...no its not a direct drop in, for what the swap would cost you could have a nice turbo kit for the 2.4, and no the 2.4L in the alero is not the same as the new 2.4L ecotec engines in the newer GM cars.

Yeah, but at over $3 a gallon and this bein my daily driver, a turbo is not a good way to go. When I get this car paid off I will have the dealer look for a newer one with an ecotec.

The Ecotec engine is actually pretty much a direct drop in, if you have the transmission. You'll only need mounts, the radiator that came with the Eco, and the PCM. I don't think you'll be able to use the tranny from the 2.4. It's the same transmission (4t40E) but, if I remember correctly, the bell housing is different.

It will, however, be a hell of a lot easier to just get one with an Eco already in it, like you mentioned.

Do you want the Eco for performance, or just because it's a newer, better engine?

Mine's not too bad. The rated fuel economy on my Alero (26/37) rivals that of a Mazda 3.

I know on my daily lead-footed commute to work i at least get 25-26. I've gotten well into the 30s on the highway as well. I honestly don't check it that often because it's always seemed acceptable.

An ecotec is a direct swap into the alero. You just have to source the ecotec specific parts, wiring harness, ECU/PCM, mounts, etc.

Sorta like going from Dsries to a Bseries.. just get the parts specific for it and slappy slappy.

For fuel economy, with my ecotec I see about 26mpg in town and up to 42mpg on the highway. Mine is a 5 speed too.
