Turn signal problem
Ok, so yesterday i was driving and my turn signals were working fine. Now they dont work at all. Hazzards work, fuse is good, but no current going to the fuse. I dont know too much about wiring like that, but i am guessing it is the switch or the relay. Can any one tell me how to test them?

I have the same problem, my blinkers have a tendency to stop workin for a day or two. what does the hazard have to do with the turn signals.

yea i also had the same problem actually got mine fixed today along with another recall to re flash the pcm I Got alot of information about the recall because the first time i went they tried to tell me there was no recall for my car which pissed me off so i found every possible thing about the recall
the bulletin number if they give you any trouble is 04098A
the recall is for 1999-2002 aleros grand ams and malibu's also 1999 cutlass
to tell if your car is under the warranty you have to look at the last digits of you vin here are the cars that are under warranty
1999 is xc002988-xc434868
2000 is yc000007-yc372282
2001 is 1c242103-1c286657
and last is 2002 2c100001 2c321946
Mine works great now lol now i don't have to hit the hazard switch every time i have to turn If you need any more info on the recall pm me
oh yea and the warranty is only good for 10 years or 150000miles which ever is first so even if yours is working and your vin falls in the warranty i would replace it because its free and it could stop working at any time

Well, I lucked out. Dor some reason it started working again. I did nothing different. Just turned the car on the other night to check it, and it worked.
Now i am just waiting to have it go wrong for good.
I have put way too much money in this car(stock parts mind you), so why not put more.

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNING SWITCHES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARD LAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE.
Defect Consequence:
WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

i had this same problem for 2+ years, i finally got around the fixing it last Wednesday. what you wanna do is contact a GM dealership and tell them about the problem. They'll ask for the vin # and then see if its serviceable for the recall. make sure you tell them its the hazard switch problem. because at first when i called, the guy said there was no recall for my vin # until i explained it was the hazard switch and he said "oh, an electrical problem." then he checked it again and saw that it was serviceable
and also, dont use your my vin # on a alero recall website because i did that and they too initially said my car wasn't serviceable but it really was.
you wanna be on top of this, because when i had this problem for the last couple of years, it was worse during the cold for some reason. its really a breath of fresh air to have new turning signals.

When I found out that mine were under the recall I took my car to a GM stealership. They wanted to charge me so I told the guy to eff off. I talked to the manager and he had them fix it. I got in my car and the damn dash had a cut in it right below the hazard switch. Got a new dash out of the whole deal and my blinkers work.

Here's a sad story. My wife's was covered in the recall, when we took it in I asked them to pull up any open recalls, they did the reflash but didn't do the switch. Then the switch went out at 160k. So I broke down and paid them to replace it. This was earlier this year. When we got the car back it worked fine. Well, last week the blinkers/hazards are going out again! I have to call the dealer, and I'm sure they'll want me to pay because the part is out of its 30 day warranty or whatever. This car has been a love hate relationship for me.

Update: My local GM dealer will warranty the part for 12mos/12k mi, so it will go back on. The only other open recall he showed was a generator reflash. We'll see if that solves the problem.

Disappointed
So the Alero has been in the shop 2 days for a 30 minute job. They can't get the blinker problem to duplicate since it has been really warm here. I called the GM recall number and they called the dealer and basically everybody wasted my time. I'm F'n pissed right now.
An open recall, they wouldn't fix it. I pay to fix it, it goes bad again but won't duplicate, they won't fix it. It's not like I'm saying the whole engine should be replaced, it's a freakin $30 part.

Sounds like the dealership is just effing with you. If you have an other GM dealer close to where you live then take it to them.

I've had something like that happen and I knew the owner, so I went over their heads and talked to the owner of the dealership..... Long story short, someone lost their job and I got my car fixed for free.

So when I picked the car up I got it to repeat the problem. Pushed in the hazard switch, no flashy, called the tech over, he pushed the button out then in again and it starts flashing. "Works fine now." So they say, bring it in next time it's doing this.
It's my wife's car. 2 days later she waddles in (7 months pregnant), and all of a suddent they're like, "Oh we'll find the problem. I don't feel good about her driving a car in such an unsafe condition!" So they replaced the actual hazard switch and it appears to be working fine now.
Long story short, if you want something done from a dealership, send in the pregnant girl.

Thank you for posting this. My signal would start clicking as I drove down the road (no actual signal, just the clicking sound). I called up GM and told them about the service number, my VIN and that it had less than 150,000. My vin fit in the slot, and I get this replaced for free. Thanks again.

well I got my hazard switch replaced but it's still clicking away at random. I read on a grand am site that I need to clean the grease off the contacts on the multi switch (turn signal lever). How I see the 3 screws to get the plastic cover to loosen but how to I just take the top off? should it be forced off? I don't what to break this plastic in the 30 degree temps
