Water Pump

Mine is whining like a supercharger at 6k RPM running 20 PSI.. and its getting annoying.. so i went to the parts store and bought a *NEW* water pump.. brand new.. for 22 dollars.. yes, i said twenty two dollars, and with a lifetime warranty.

from what i can see, all you need is to take the belt off the pully, un bolt the pully (4 little bolts).. take off the pump itself (5 little bolts.. gotta drain the coolant, too) pop the new one in, replace the 5 bolts, put the pully and 4 bolts back on, and put the belt back over the pully.. and fill it up with coolant (and let the engine run for a while with the cap off the reservoir.. this will let the air out of the system) and voila! i just replaced the power steering pump.. and this is looking to be ALOT easier than that.. dont take it to a shop

Totally easier than the power steering pump. Just one tip is to loosen the bolts on the pulley before you remove the belt, that way you have the tension to help hold the pulley from moving.

so retarded.. i replaced the water pump, and it still whines.. replaced the power steering pump.. still whines..

went down to O'Reillys, and for 16 dollars i picked up an "idler" pully.. sits right behind the water pump and above the crank pully.. its about the size of a skateboard wheel.. stuck it on there and the whining finally quit.

Power Steering = $204

Water Pump = $17

"Idler" Pully = $16

and all this time it was the idler pully.. and my car sounds TOTALY different.. I can finally hear the engine.. not the whining of a pully with shot bearings.. at least i wont have to worry about the water pump or the power steering pump for a long time..

Yeah, and if you got the new style water pump with the steel impeller versus the original with the cast impeller you got a little HP boost due to less rotating weight..

Oh, and you can change the bearings in those idler pulleys for like $5.
