There's a lot more GDI cars on the market now... it's definitely the way of the future. GDI allows you to run higher compression so you can get more power from the same amount of fuel = greater fuel economy. Emissions is still tough to meet, so they're expensive because for now we're just throwing a lot of precious metals at them to meet lower standards.
A GDI engine is pretty hard to miss when you hear it running, too, unless they spend a LOT of money on sound-deadening, it sounds almost like a diesel. Some of the Bimmers have pretty good noise levels, and the Lexus LS-F is actually hard to tell from in the cabin since in the injectors are buried in the V of the engine. But my little car ticks like crazy, especially when it's cold - but not near as bad as say a Solstice or Sky (then again I don't get 260hp).

I should have read the article. It doesn't tell you much.. there have been a lot of advances in GDI technology, from the injectors themselves to the locations to the controls. Some automakers even inject up to 3 times during a combustion cycle. Once to pre-wet the combustion chamber and cool it down, once as the actual charge, and another small injection to burn off remaining exhaust gases to improve fuel ecomony and control emissions (used with internal egr to increase the effect I'd assume). Then of course the control strategies differ during cold starts, acceleration, and steady state cruising. You have to eek every last bit of energy out of it to meet the 35mpg fleet avg.

Port injection is a lot different than the direct injection that the article talks about. Fuel is still mixed with air in the intake, not injected directly into the cylinder.

Yup. Getting good power out of those motors because of DI too.

the port has nothing to do with Injection.. The Alero is port injection, this picture shows a direct injection combustion chamber.

Semantics. Remove the word "port" and everyone is agreed. It's relatively new to the market so it may take a while for all of us to refer to it correctly.

MPI vs. GDI. The word port makes a big difference. That's where fuel has been injected for years... now in the new "gasoline direct injection" engines it is injected directly into the combustion chamber (aka cylinder).

Yes, I know that, and from what I can see, colonel6632 knows it too because he mentioned the new ecotec that has direct injection. Oops, he slipped and put in the word "port"

But... the new Cobalts don't have a DI engine. They specifically call out the "155hp 2.2L Ecoctec" as being MFI. The Solstice and Sky had that monster turbo DI Eco. The Caddy gets the DI 3.6 and they've put them in a couple Buicks and the Equinox so far that I can think of off the top of my head.

There is no tuning programs available as of yet for the LNF ecotecs with the direct injection thats the bigest fallback for them for the time being.

Funny.
This is how I was taught an internal combustion engine works.
On magic School bus way back in the day.

You sure? I know the 08+ 2.4 doesn't have any support.. the HPTuners website says 05-09 2.0.
