I am all ready to start on my engine work now, buying the RSM s/c but am unsure what PSI I should run and what I would need to upgrade in order to run 8 or 12 PSI. As of right now I have ported headers, ported upper and lower intake manifold, 62mm TB, and 2.5 inch free flowing exhaust with a dump off.
I was also wondering how much we can bore out our engines and what kind of power I would be looking at if I did it? One of my mech buddies said prob around 40 HP but hes not do anything like that to a 3400 SFI before.

hmmmmm, if i remember correxctly you cant bore these engines out very much at all, so i dont think you can get 40 hp from them, i think oldsmans is slightly bored,(has the 2.4 though) but still didnt see gains like 40, thats alot, we dont even make a hp per cubic inch in fact we make about .81 hp per cubic inch and so to get about 40 more hp out of the engine you would need to bore roughly 50 cubic inches over stock, and i dont think our block can bore that much, now if you add all of the ported things and stuff, like if you had all of the parts like redog then he is probbaly pushing around if not more then 1 hp per cubic inch, which is a very rare thing nowdays without using forced induction

yea it is rare, these little preludes, rsx type s's, the new civic si's all have over 1 hp per cubic inch without boost, and the new hemi at 6.1 litre's is suppose to have 425 hp so its right there.......
it seems like hes taken all the right steps........id say get an adjustable fpr, and that will let you run the 8psi without worrying too much, but once you get into that 12 psi range im sure you will start having troubles, if not with engine internals and the bottom end, with the tranny.........

Well they make 12 PSI for the 3400 SFI so I know it can be done was just wondering what needed to be upgraded to do it. My goal is to get my 3400 pushing 400 HP or more by the end of the month. I can have the engine bored out for 500.00 and I was looking at getting the stroke increased at the same time as all the other work but it would cost a rather large sum of money and Im not sure its been done on the 3400 yet.

i meant rare for gm :P , only a few good cars push out 1 hp per square inch in the gm lineup like the LS engines, those push out almost exactly 1 per square inch, so yeah i was wrong but right, just not clear on what i said

I would just buy the 6psi version, I dont think you will have the need to do any other engine mods.

john has been investing a ton of money work and time into his car to reach 500, but you still need to put almost just as much of everything to even be able to reach 400

yep, horsepower out of an engine is an exponential thing.........it takes more money for less and less horsepower the farther you go.......

are you guys talking 400 crank or wheel hp?
400 crank is very attainable (320 wheel hp)
400 wheel hp, well, thats a totally different story, thats 500 crank and envolves a whole lot.

Having 400-500 whp doesnt mean diddlely squat if that power doesnt meet the street.
