Got parts from PNP to mostly put the car back together: Rear bumper reinforcement, absorber, brackets, screws, and bumper cover. Frame rail end piece is on order, once it comes in it goes in to the shop for surgery.
I even managed to find a bumper cover in fairly good shape that was the same color, so no painting needed! :)

Starting this past Saturday, November 1st, I parked my Alero in the garage for the winter. I need to get some RaceRamps tire cradles to keep the tires from flat-spotting over the next 5 months.

Wellll it's been a good bad good bad day for my car....
good - got part one of three pieces of the spoiler on
bad - tried to get her started, plugs were all backwards
good - got a new tune with Paul (mmgt1) --> very good part!!!
Bad - just as Paul's loading the last update i noticed my volts had dropped to 9... uh oh.... go to restart the car and it wouldn't go... finally got her going and just barely made it home... had to push it in the driveway.... top it off there's a fuel leak and pretty sure the alternator is toast....
A big thank you to Paul for making the trip up to tune!

Glad I came out too man!! I don't know how your wires got so messed up. Not a single lead was on the right plug...lol With the amount of work done this year the issues you have a so minor. Once you get that alt figured out, whether its the alt or wiring and find that leak your golden man. Sounded really sweet with that Corsa, nothing like it that Ive herd!! Your suspension upgrade felt spot on as well... shes getting there~~!

We got the '00 Alero back from the body shop today, I'll have to give it a good once over in the daylight, but it looks like he did an excellent job of un-totaling it for less than 20% of what the insurance company estimated. (He did use parts from PNP, that I supplied, and didn't completely repaint everything so there are some chips where the body panel hit the trunk lid, but hey for not very much money we kept a perfectly good Alero out of the junk yard.)
Of course now that we got the '04 Final 500 I'm not sure what to do with the '00, we don't really need a second one.
And something I noticed but will have to verify, the '04 Final 500 drives significantly different, maybe it is because of fewer miles, i.e. less wear and tear, but the steering seems tighter and the suspension firmer. (And it sounds much nice, a more deep growl. I swear our '00 doesn't sound like that.)

I would run up the miles on the '00 if it isnt too expensive. Keep low miles on the final 500 as long as possible. Why ruin the aleros that are already collectables.

coupe, sunroof, spoilerless trunk, good hood, good headlights, good interior, preferred with 2.2. very interested, pm me some details if your looking to part with it. I have a friend wanting to drive it winter before I retire it if it is like it sounds. Let me know!

sooo... before I decided to rip the alternator off and take it in to have it tested, I asked my mechanic next door if he had any way of testing it on the car... he came over with his multimeter and started poking around... and yeah.... the pigtail was unplugged!! she charges great now!
next issue was an exhaust leak that we noticed as well... looks to be coming from the donut gasket on the cross over pipe on my headers... and the smell of gas... well its looking to be from the return line at the tank...
so overall, im happy cuz it seems to be minor, easy fixes so far, then I can worry about the body work!
and then it had to go and snow tonight :( so much for going for a cruise!

Oldsman
11-21-2014, 03:41 PM
That area they meant use or whatever you call it is worthless. It is so thick it won't sit right against the car. They seem to have thought the skirts were suppose to be major cocked on the car. I must not have sent pics in Spanish when they were designing.
We had to add steel to give it a place to sit and attached there. Going to make up brackets for underneath the rocker for added support.
Due to poor fiberglassing just attaching in 3 places, middle and ends won't be durable enough.
I installed a new alternator and serpentine belt today.

Went to Indy today and picked up some of them there headlight covers. Sleepy tuned me up so no more SES light in my face for the 02, rev limiter is perfect, and we can see where it tops out sometime now :posi:
Thanks again, second time we got everything. Got better mileage on the way back and if something was going to come back on, it would have by the time got back I imagine. Cluster looks so nice without that damn thing and I can tell if I break anything now.

They look even better on my car then just seeing them :coolio: Sleepy seems to be able to find all this fancy stuff, I never have any luck. Ebay at one time had one side as well.
Changed my oil today. I tried running about 1/3 the recommended amount of seafoam on the way back sunday, in the oil. Had done the other treatments several times to date over the years but never in the oil before. Granted, this is only the second change (1st when I got it, full synthetic oil, 1 quart lucas) and a good 10,000 miles later I got a good bit of crud out of there. We drained and refilled about 3 fresh quarts to flush through, idled for about 15 min back up to steady running temp, then dumped and cleaned everything very well. I refilled with full synthetic again like always, no additives. 75 miles later everything is running tip top and the oil still looks as fresh as when it got pored in. No horror stories yet, leaks or anything terrible. Not that I've seen many but- I've never seen a 200,000 mile motor run fresh oil for a good drive like that and check still so clean. I'm very curious to see what happens from here.

Got a new cat. The old one decided to break where the pipe meets the rear manifold. Got a Magnaflow.
i've been working on cleaning up a bit. i removed my pinstripes that i put on (it felt like too much and they were just annoying, plus it'll be one less annoyance for the future paint job.)
i also installed a magnaflow muffler. it gives off this low rumble while idling and cruising, it's lovely. it also removed the heavy and cumbersome mess that is the stock muffler.
i have more cleaning to do tomorrow...since it's gonna be 50 - 60 degrees here tomorrow i may as well make the best of it before winter actually starts.

Got some replacement backup parts for my F500 Alero. Found the needle in a haystack! Got the leathers and back seats. Even the headrests that Papa Rad17 wanted to buy! They could use some cleaning but that's normal from a J/Y. The driver's seat bottom came but has a rip in it at the seam. It might be sewable but I got a good deal on it all.

I settled for some grey leather grandam gt headrests I finally found cheap. Just got them in, still getting used to the different look but I like um! Once I decide if the seat-belt holders will go back on or not I'll get some more pictures up. Here is a teaser, Not being able to see the rest of the grey interior they do look a little out of place in pictures. In person, I like, very much. The seats have a different 'posture' if you will and I just simply prefer the design.

You need leather seats to fully pull that off, it looks very odd with clothe/leather mixed. Do a full leather interior swap!

I could afford the head rests, but that's out of budget right now. Rather than swapping stuff I want to just get it all professionally done red/black one of these days. But like the other big plans, that's a long way off. The grey leather matches all the grey pleather and panels perfectly, I really don't think it looks to bad. I'm also finding out they are more comfortable.

I replaced the starter on Tuesday. Lasted 11 years and 107k miles. Wasn't too bad to replace street-side sitting on two jack stands. I did find that small plastic sheild that covers the gap by the flywheel super annoying, they could have left it flat and not covering the bolts by 1/4"...

That's probably just those plastic clips sliding in the splints. You get that for $5-$10 in double package on ebay.
I wouldn't glue them because I can assure you that it won't hold.
For example this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Left-Window-Regulator-Guide-Clips-Pontiac-Grand-AM-Driver-Side-Clip-Front-99-05-/111117830775)

I sanded and painted the bottom of the inside of my rear doors where rust was developing. My Alero is a driver but I don't want it falling apart from rust. Oddly enough that is the only spot on the car with rust. That will change once I move up to Michigan.
I also fixed a tire. Brand new tire with a nail in it cuz my neighbor is a roofing guy and lazy about picking his shit up.
I tweaked the settings on my amp for my subs as well.

X2. When I get a new dd and the alero is put aside (hopefully later this year) I'll have post a bunch of pictures of my body work. Molding on the razzi spoiler and rust repair in the garage with mid-grade materials and nearly 0 experience. He'll have a stoke! But hey, how the heck else am I supposed to learn? Like everyone else I'd rather save the money and have the enjoyment and learning experience of doing it myself. We know it won't be perfect. There are only a few aleros on here that are really worth shelling out the thousands for professional body work anyway. Like Tim I'm pretty confident I can turn out something pretty decent myself.

See your last bit was useful. My 65' tbird which I care about being done proper is at a professional shop. My alero should roll over 200k next week, so there is no real point spending the big bucks to make it perfect. In perfect condition my car is worth less than $2k. That leave the two feasible options being to leave it looking like total shit, which it does from quite a distance. The other option is to fix it myself so the normal every day person likely doesnt notice anything at all or if they do they have to be looking close.

I can't help but feel we've gotten off topic... What I do to my alero today?
I drove it, check fluids, put gas in it, about to go drive it again. Getting ready to roll over 208xxx miles on my to my interview this evening. If I get the job I will hopefully be bringing home a new car next week so the alero can finally go rest on some jack stands while some much needed work gets done, if not until after homecoming. poor thing is showing it's age...

I finally got my recall done! Least I got a free car wash out of it..
What did I do to my alero today? I took my plates off of it and got it ready for the tow truck. Took all of my aftermarket off of it to use for the future (or sell)
Why? I got slammed in the rear on the highway. Not at fault. Damage to the unibody and wrinkled lots of the lower trunk frame. Wasn't worth putting the money into it to get it drivable again. Even though I loved my alero to death, I could move on to something a bit bigger and better with the money the insurance gave. I'm now an owner of a beautiful 2000 mustang. I'll get pics of both cars to you guys as soon as I can

I went to the autoparts store this morning at 10-11am, ordered a vent valve solenoid to hopefully fix my engine light, and a walker resonator pipe that connects the muffler and the cat since mine had holes.
The parts arrived at the store at 330pm, drove to my mechanics and got in right away, an hour later everything was done, engine light removed, and my exhaust is silent for the first time in 3 years.

But the wiring is pretty taunt and ran right above the rear header in the exhaust tunnel right now cause thats the only way i could get it to reach. So i got an extension so i can move the wire out from above the header and relocate it.

I probably should have saved the money for something more important but I was really tired of the stock radio and the FM transmitter I was using really sucked, so last week I dropped the $130 for the wire harness with chimes and an install kit....

didn't notice how dusty that was until I just looked at the pics here.
the rest of today will be spent trying and get the screws for my air filter off....

Why is the deck out so far? I had the same deck in my car right flush with the bezel...
kadawg13
09-19-2015, 02:38 PM
I couldn't get the mounting brackets to bolt to the deck with the bolts supplied and get it in the space. the bolts have a smooth head, no screw driver slot or squared edges for a wrench. so it's just kind of sitting there.
it took about 20 minutes to wire the harness, had to strip the wires for the speakers because it had RCA plugs but the harness for the unit has wires, not plugs.
took another 2 hours fighting with the thing to figure out I couldn't get the brackets on, then trying to fit all the wires in with the door chime unit hanging somewhere.....
I can push it in a little more flush but I just got tired of messing with it and gave up

fitting everything in behind the radio is a real pita. It takes a lot of crafty packing but it can be done.

I think this is how all Aleros should have been equipped. (Or at least GLS models.)

Today, I vacuumed and cleaned out the car for the first time since I bought it. The previous owner left a TON of relays in the glove box. Possible previous electrical problems? Plan on conditioning the leather and looking into a non-working driver window tomorrow.
Installed a new window regulator, glued some brackets back together (on the door panel) as they seem to be getting a bit brittle.

I went to the junkyard to get a replacement passenger airbag cover. They wouldn't sell just the cover so I had to buy the whole airbag for $50. Better than the stealership they could get one for $720!!!!!!! I swapped out the cover today as well, was an easy job.

Motor still great getting 22-24 mpg. My scan gage always say 27 at 75-80 mpg. Leaks oil somewhere and burns oil. Coolant leak at the water inlet. But it took me on a 800 mile road trip and was perfect.

Replaced the battery in my Alero with an Everstart Maxx. Consumer Reports rated it a best buy for the group number. I was hesitant purchasing such a critical piece of equipment from Walmart but I have seen them consistently over the years rated very high.

Not so much today but last Sunday. Broke it out of hibernation, charged the battery (factory installed still going) changed oil, checked all fluids, complete safety check. While it was up in the air, cleaned the under carriage and engine bay of cobwebs/dirt. Touched up any undercarriage pieces that were developing rust? It's never seen snow/salt in it's lifetime so don't know why it's doing that.
Car was covered so no dirt, but used detailer with wax in it on the paint and polished wheels.

Installed a Cosmo Evolution short ram intake, however I didn't use the little Cosmo filter that came with it.. I got a giant (10.125in long x 6in round) Spectre on sale at O'Reilly Link to filter (http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/SPT0/9731/N1887.oap?ck=Search_N1887_-1_-1&pt=N1887&ppt=C0388). Had to do a bit of head scratching and backwoods engineering to get it to fit (sri is something like 2-3/4in smallest ring on filter is 3in) I drilled my own hole for the temp sensor rather than adding length to the wire.... in retrospect I should have not used an auger/paddle bit that's meant for wood...hole ended up not so round..shoulda used the Dremel.. eh.. Gorilla Tape to the rescue! Which reminds me.. I forgot to plug the original temp sensor hole.
Yes, yes I know.. pics or it didn't happen :p

A little off topic, but...
How hard is it to swap cruise control switches? found a couple aleros in the junk yard with them in real nice condition, mine the lettering is wearing off, and look rather bad. Also what parts would I wanna grab off a '95 Achieva S? other than intake cam.. on second thought I'll grab both cams.. hunting down the exhaust secret cam will be more effort than I wanna do.. also are the cams drop in and go, or is there modification needed? Not today but, Saturday we got the stock manifold off, only broke one stud but a bolt extractor took it right out. 7 of the other studs pulled right out, 2 the bolt came off clean so we didnt pull those. We got the new studs in, thermostat replaced. and the new manifold on. Turns out I had to modify the brake booster vacuum line a pinch so we left the rest for next weekend. Hope to have all the other goodies put on and ready for exhaust by the end of the week.
I don't like quoting such an old post but what header did you go with? Was it designed for the N-body, or was it designed for either J-body(Cavalier/Sunfire) or Delta (Cobalt/G5) cars?

The listing was titled as "Chevy Cavalier Malibu Grand AM Sunfire 2.2L Exhaust Manifold Performance Header" I believe its the same design as the M2 one on ebay (where I got mine as well). Its still on there, been on for about a year. Still in good shape, everything is holding up. I didn't use the gasket it came with. used 'Copper' gasket maker.

Renewed the registration last week. Today I installed a new eyelet on the negative amp cable, and drove it up town to get a spare key cut for the Intrigue. I think its time for some new front brake pads. BabyBlue's old setup is finally nearing it's end days after being installed used 2 years ago at homecoming. GM Parts Direct finally shipped out my new coil pack bolts yesterday, after two weeks! Next week she'll go in the garage to extract the old ones and get some fresh brake pads. 231,137 miles when I pulled into the car port earlier, still rips through the gears just fine. :awesome:

Also picked up a Standard shift knob (http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/blackchrome-shift-knob/6000001851706) a couple years back and have decided to try and do some makeshift modifications to the knob itself so that I can use it on Izzy (Who is an auto).
Already have some ideas.. The main of which being that I get something like a copper pipe that would be able to fit inside of the knob while also being able to nicely fit over the shaft so that I can use a "Push down" movement in order to shift gears.
I've already gotten out my calliper and the knob is pretty much just 2mm bigger than the shaft, so shouldn't take much to make it work.
I just don't really like the stock shifter knob and have been looking for a project to do for the longest time! Will definitely upload pics when I am done to show you guys how it turned out.

That's the only possible thing I could think of. Would it be possible for the springs to get weak enough to allow it to not engage at all? As much 'umf' as it took to get them re-hooked I just don't see them being THAT weak.

Still around. Washed and waxed. Love washing off salt only to have paint come with it and show rust.
A new* power side mirror switch installed in the Alero. The refurbished part came from Switch City USA via ebay. Worth the 14.99 (including shipping and handling) to get the control back after years of it being inoperative. Although it fits perfectly into the holster I believe the switch came out of an Intrigue because the face of the switch is far more contoured.
